North Korea Unlikely Capable of Testing Hydrogen Bomb - Former DoD Scientist

06:53 07.01.2016,ย North Koreaโ€™s latest nuclear test was almost certainly not a real hydrogen bomb or thermonuclear device, former US Chief of Naval Operations science and policy advisor Theodore Postol told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik)ย โ€” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said inย a biefing onย Wednesday that the preliminary evaluation ofย the alleged North Korean nuclear test does not support Pyongyangโ€™s claims ofย a successful tryout.

  • โ€œThe only thing I can imagine them doing given their technological and resource limitations is putting tritium and deuterium [containers] inย the cavity ofย a normal atomic bomb,โ€ Postol, who is also an MIT Professor Emeritus ofย Science, Technology and National Security Policy, said onย Wednesday.

North Koreaโ€™s official Central Television reported the underground test earlier onย Wednesday asย being a full hydrogen bomb, butย Postol said it was much more likely toย have been a regular atomic weapon withย tritium and deuterium, two radioactive hydrogen-related elements, added in.

โ€ข โ€œIf the plutonium implosion works properly they probably would be able toย ignite the tritium and deuterium,โ€ Postol said.

To give offย high energy, 14-million volt neutrons fromย the fusion reaction would increase the efficiency ofย a plutonium burn untilย it disassembled and the nuclear reaction stopped, he explained.

โ€ข โ€œThis would result inย higher energy [but] this is not a multi-stage thermonuclear device or hydrogen bomb which has an atomic bomb next toย an assembly ofย other nuclear materials toย ignite a full fusion reaction,โ€ the scientist explained.

The temperatures achieved inย the thermonuclear burn are somewhat higher thanย a regular nuclear weapon, butย they are not thermonuclear, or multi-phase nuclear weapons, which are very difficult and challenging technological devices toย make, he cautioned.

It took decades ofย experience byย accomplished nuclear weapons designers inย the great powers toย create 200 kiloton warheads weighing 200 pounds apiece ofย the kind that are carried byย US cruise missiles, he explained.

โ€ข The North Koreans, however, โ€œare not close toย that kind ofย thing,โ€ he emphasized.

North Koreaโ€™s testing of a hydrogen bomb may worsen its relations with China, which have gradually improved over the past years, said Andrei Lankov, a professor at South Koreaโ€™s Kookmin University.

Earlier today, South Korean media reported that a strong earthquake occurred inย North Korea nearย the Phungeri nuclear test site inย Yangkang Province. Later, Pyongyang said inย an official statement that North Korea had successfully tested a hydrogen bomb.

This was a wrong move forย North Korea, asย Pyongyang's action might have enraged China withย whom which North Korea has been seeking toย improve relations forย the pastย few years.

  • "Tests have done great damage toย Sino-North Korean relations," Lankov, who's an expert inย East Asian politics, said.

China has already voiced its disapproval ofย North Korea's test ofย a hydrogen bomb.

"Today North Korea has announced a nuclear test. The Chinese government firmly opposes it. The prevention ofย nuclear proliferation and the provision ofย peace and stability inย Northeastern Asiaย โ€” this is China's position," China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said.

Hua said that Beijing has called onย Pyongyang toย act inย accordance withย its obligations inย the area ofย nuclear non-proliferation.

The Chinese government might even avoid harsh public statements condemning Pyongyang, butย next thing you know Beijing would suddenly need toย replace several bolts inย oil pipelines leading toย North Korea or find an unknown toxic substance inย products destined toย North Korea, Lankov said, hinting how the Chinese could punish Pyongyang.

  • "Currently, many top officials withinย the Chinese government don't particularly likeย North Korea, butย the Chinese strategic interests demand a stable split onย the Korean peninsula," Lankov explained.

If good relations withย China are so important toย North Korea, then why did Pyongyang decide toย test a hydrogen bomb, making Beijing angry? Lankov suggested that it could have happened due toย the lack ofย coordination betweenย the North Korean military and its diplomats.

A few times inย the past, the military carried outย tests which set back the work ofย North Korean diplomats. For example inย February 2012, Pyongyang signed an important agreement withย the United States aboutย the delivery ofย some food supplies intoย North Korea. However, Washington scrapped the deal two weeks later afterย the North Korean military tested one ofย its nuclear missiles, Lankov reminded. ย  ย
