The ABC of a Young Bandera Follower

This text is highly recommended for all those who believe that Bandera adherents are not present in Ukraine.

Internet newspaper “Doba” (24 hours) from Ternopil reports that the second edition of “Insurgent ABC” was published in this city. Its main characters are Alyarmik, Adolfik, Liliputin and others. The author is historian and social activist Oleg Vitvitskiy. He published the first edition of ABC last autumn, but could not present the book because, at first, the revolution and, then, the war took place in the country. The first edition of the book was quickly sold out, that is why it was updated to include a section on the “Heavenly Hundred” (that is on Maydan participants killed in February 2014.) The new book will be soon distributed throughout the country and appear in the eastern Ukrainian libraries.

The protagonist of the book is a child soldier from UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army) Alyarmik (from the German word “der Alarm” - alarm) who beats all enemies, including the emperor named Liliputin. The author writes:

- Possibly, it sounds categorical, but analyzing my own search for role models, I have realized that there were no new literary heroes for our children and that few dared to fill it with non-standard and bold images. Because of this gap and because of me being historian and father, I got the idea to offer Ukrainian children the personage of Alyarmik – a domestic superhero, a child trumpeter in the ranks of UPA – who became the key character in the “Insurgent ABC.” So, as they say, let me introduce Alyarmik – a child soldier of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. He is a true Ukrainian, a member of the Youth OUN (Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists) since 1942. His character is stable, cheerful, and fearless. He is a faithful and reliable friend, a student of the UPA School “Oleni” (Deer.) Alyarmik is interested in sports, geography, history, and military arts. The author of ABC claims that the book targets not only children but also adults. Each letter illustrates the word associated with the history of the UPA.

- I am candidate of historical sciences, and that is why I approached the topic as a historian. The idea came when I stayed with the kids for some time. I observed that they looked, read, and became interested in SpongeBob, Masha, or Luntik that is in American or Russian animated cartoon’s characters but a Ukrainian hero was lacking. The name Alyarmik comes from my youth. When we camped as schoolchildren, we had “alyarm” and had such nicknames. This name, that ​​is alarm, means that, as the trumpeter of his company, Alyarmik warns the insurgents of danger. Therefore, it is a fictional character, and the book is more literary-historical than historical-literary. There are fictional characters, such as Adolfik - it is clear with whom this name is associated as well as the name of Liliputin. Medvechukovich is a crossbreed of Medvedchuk and Yanukovych, - says Oleg Vitvitskiy.

The author says that he wrote a book as an ABC because he could not find any interesting analogies in bookstores:

- When I went to a bookstore to buy an ABC for my youngest son, it turned out that all of them were either a reprint or something like “mama myla ramy” (“mother washed a frame” is a phrase from an old Soviet ABC.) As a historian and a public activist, I could not write a politically neutral alphabet and intertwined it with the topics of current politics. The insurgents are fighting not only Adolfik and Stalin, but also modern villains – Medvechukovich and Liliputin.

- And then tomorrow - a thousand of new Alyarmiks will go marching victoriously through Ukraine! The book has been published in somewhat simple format, but its essence has not changed. We have even managed to link together our heroes with the heroes of “Heavenly Hundred.” We plan that, in addition to Ternopil, the “Insurgent ABC” will be available to the children in East Ukraine - in schools and libraries, - added Vitvitskiy when talking about the second edition of the book.

When I have looked at the reference of Alyarmik, the references of the protagonist in Soviet war film “Seventeen Moments of Spring” has come to my mind:

- From the reference of Stierlitz, a member of the NSDAP (Nazi Party) since 1933, Standartenführer SS (VI Department RSHA): “true Aryan. Character is Nordic and stoic. Excellent athlete: Berlin champion in tennis.”

Let's compare:

- From the reference of Alyarmik, a member of the Youth OUN since 1942, soldier of Ukrainian Insurgent Army: true Ukrainian. Character is stable, cheerful and fearless. He is faithful and reliable friend, a student of the UPA School “Oleni”, interested in sports, geography, history, and military arts.

By the way, speaking of ABCs, some time ago such a patriotic alphabet was disseminated on the Internet among Maydan adherents.

But, let go back to the children. Bandera followers have taken care of the education of young generations since long time ago. Here are some examples:

First in a small print run in 1996, and, then, in 2007 the comics “Ukraine`s Battle” were printed. This is how the portal newsru.com commented on it:

“The comics about the insurgents who fought selflessly against “Moskal (Ukrainian nickname for Russians) murderers” were published in Ukraine.

The presentation of a comic book “Ukraine`s Battle,” which describes the fight of soldiers of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) against the Soviet troops and made by artist Leonid Perfetsky took place in Ternopil (Ukraine). The comics depict the Soviet soldiers as ugly and bloodthirsty while the soldiers of the UPA are brave heroes.

The author of comics was a soldier of SS Division “Galichina” Leonid Perfetsky who wrote and drew them for leaflets and newspapers published by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. In 1953, the comics were assembled and published by the daily “America” of the Ukrainian diaspora in Philadelphia (USA) and in the early 1970s they reappeared in the magazine of the Union of Ukrainian Youth “Krylati” (Winged.) The last year, the department of family and youth of the Ternopil Regional State Administration asked the editors of this magazine to help publishing comics in a book,” - reports “Kommersant-Ukraine”.

The book run is 2000 copies. It will be distributed among the regional libraries and public organizations according to Yaroslav Lipovetsky, chief specialist of the regional Department of Family and Youth. He mentioned that, at first, the idea was to publish an album for coloring, because “it is intended primarily for children.” However, this idea was abandoned, and the editing work was limited to bringing the text closer to the norms of modern Ukrainian language. The comics depict scenes from the history of the UPA, as well as the life of local population during the war. Among other things, the book contains a drawing about how “Moskal murderers” kill a Ukrainian peasant.

The first edition was distributed primarily among school and college libraries. Later, another 12,000 copies appeared in Ukrainian and, then, an additional run of 10 thousand in Russian. All Russian-language edition was distributed in South-East of Ukraine. Then, other reprints were made.

In 2008, comics for children “Killings commissioned by the KGB” about how the KGB killed Stepan Bandera were published.

The comics were published and presented by the Union of Ukrainian Youth. According to the comics’ designers, the book has no humorous content because it targets children from 13 years and older that is “those who are in the search of their political ideal.” The book tells how the KGB led the hunt for Bandera in Munich and describes his murder by KGB agent Bohdan Stashinsky. “Comics show in layman's terms the tragic death of the Ukrainian hero nationalist,” - says Andrey Levus, the head of the Ukrainian Information Service.

Ukrainian politician Irina Farion once replied to a girl at a school competition in Lviv: “We need that Bandera comes to you, in your world as a relative, as father, as a brother, as something familial and innate.” This appeal was heard by the writers - brothers Kapranov, ardent nationalists and members of the organization “Trizub” (Trident) named after Stepan Bandera. In 2011, a book written by brothers Kapranov “Bandera and I” was published in the educational series for children “12 ballov” (12 points) dedicated to biographies of outstanding Ukrainians.

The book “Bandera and I” presents the life story of Stepan Bandera as an investigation conducted by two brothers. These schoolboys (obviously, their patriotic images fit the description of brothers Kapranovs) hear on TV as some scums call Bandera followers to be fascists. But why then, wonder the brothers,  in the history class of their school hangs a portrait of Stepan Bandera wrapped in Rushnychok (a ritual cloth embroidered with symbols and cryptograms of the ancient world), and about whose feats UPA veterans along with activists of political union “Svoboda” (Liberty) talk in detail each year to young Ukrainians?

And then the boys begin their own investigation to find out who this Bandera is – a bandit or a hero? It is not difficult to guess, even without reading the book, to what conclusion arrive the boys in whose history class hangs a portrait of Bandera.

Following the release of the second edition, the website Tsenzor.net has run a discussion on the topic of whether such a book should be published? The following comment, in my opinion, is the most revealing: “We must tell schoolchildren for sure about these Moskals-vampires because they should know from childhood who their enemy is – Moskal.”

But children should not only read the “right” books, but they have also to sing the “right” songs. The Bandera heirs have taken care of the songs too.

And this is a children's propaganda volunteer “battalion” Sokol (Falcon) formed in the Carpathian region: | Kids from Sokol shout “Death to Moskals!” These children know already who their enemy is.

The ultimate goal of all these “ABC for young Bandera followers,” comics about UPA heroes and “Moskals-murderers,” books about heroic Bandera, songs about brave nationalists is to raise a generation that hates Russia and all Russian, and is ready to kill without remorse. But all this has happened before:

There were stoic, true Aryans, there were trumpeters, songs and marches, and shouts of “Deutschland über alles” (Germany above all) and there was hatred and desire to kill . . .

Just do not forget how it has all ended . . .
