Together with the Quadrivium (arithmetic, geometry, music, astronomy), they formed the seven liberal arts that structured medieval European education. The word "trivium" literally means "three ways" or "three roads" in Latin. "Trivial" originally meant "of the trivium," something basic that any educated person should know.
